Multi-Cultural Youth Project (MCYP)

CMAA is the lead agency of the Multicultural Youth Project (MCYP), a collaboration of six agencies that include the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Community Center, Cambodian Association of Illinois, Centro Romero, Ethiopian Community Association of Chicago and Vietnamese Association of Illinois. The presence of so many cultural groups in Uptown creates the opportunity to build a strong, diverse community. MCYP brings together young people from different backgrounds for fun, friendship, dialogue, skill-building, team-building, service, and community activism. Interaction between youth from the six partner agencies occurs during events and activities such as sport leagues, outings, camp retreats, workshops, training, community celebrations and cultural exchanges. The backbone of MCYP is the Youth Leadership Council, a group of representatives from each organization that plan and lead activities throughout the year. Individually, each partner agency provides bilingual tutoring, homework help and culturally specific programming. MCYP provides funding for a part-time youth worker at each partner agency. In 2002, MCYP directly served 295 youth ages 10-18.
